What Were the Syracuse Nationals?

The Syracuse Nationals were a charter-era NBA franchise based in Syracuse, New York, that played from the 1940s through 1963. Anchored by Hall of Fame forward Dolph Schayes and owned by Danny Biasone — the man credited with inventing the 24-second shot clock that saved professional basketball — the Nats were one of the league's model franchises and one of its toughest outs. They won the NBA championship in 1955.

The 1955 Championship

The Nats' crowning achievement came in 1955, when Syracuse won the NBA Finals over the Fort Wayne Pistons in a seven-game classic — the first NBA championship decided under the new 24-second shot clock, a rule pioneered by the Nats' own owner. Dolph Schayes led a roster that defined hard-nosed 1950s basketball.

From Syracuse to Philadelphia

After the 1962–63 season the franchise relocated to Philadelphia, where it was renamed and continues to this day as one of the NBA's flagship clubs. But the title, the shot clock and the golden age belong to Syracuse — which is exactly what makes a Nationals throwback such a meaningful deep cut.

The Nats played their home games at the Onondaga County War Memorial in downtown Syracuse, one of the loudest, most intimidating arenas in the early NBA.
