The San Diego Conquistadors / Sails Collection — Royal Retros San Diego ABA Fan Shop
Authentic San Diego ABA Throwbacks. Custom Names & Numbers. Sizes S–5XL.
The San Diego Conquistadors — later The Sails — brought ABA basketball to Southern California for four seasons in the mid-1970s, headlined by a 36-year-old Wilt Chamberlain coaching from the bench (sort of) and one of the wildest single-game scoring nights in pro basketball history. The Royal Retros San Diego ABA collection brings them back with throwback jerseys, hats, and tees in the orange-and-blue ABA palette. Free name and number on most styles. Sizes S–5XL.

About the San Diego Conquistadors and Sails
The Conquistadors joined the ABA as an expansion franchise in 1972, owned by Leonard Bloom and playing at the small Peterson Gym while the league waited for a real arena to materialize. The franchise's defining moment came in 1973 when Bloom signed Wilt Chamberlain to a player-coach contract — only to have Wilt's old NBA team, the Lakers, win an injunction barring him from playing. Wilt coached anyway from the sideline (one of the most disengaged head coaching jobs in pro sports history; he reportedly disappeared at halftime of road games to play volleyball) and the Conquistadors finished 37–47.
Their wildest moment came February 14, 1975, when the Conquistadors lost 176–166 in four overtimes to the New York Nets — still the highest-scoring game in pro basketball history. Bo Lamar scored 36, Travis Grant 23 in the loss; Julius Erving had 63 for the Nets. The team rebranded as the Sails for 1975–76 with new owner Frank Goldberg but folded eleven games into the season as ABA financial chaos accelerated. San Diego didn't get pro basketball back until the Clippers arrived in 1978.
