The Sacramento Monarchs played 13 seasons in the WNBA from 1997 to 2009 at ARCO Arena (now Golden 1 Center) as one of the league's eight original 1997 franchises. The Monarchs captured the 2005 WNBA championship by defeating the Connecticut Sun 3–1 in the WNBA Finals.

The championship roster featured Yolanda Griffith (2005 WNBA Finals MVP), Ticha Penicheiro, and DeMya Walker under head coach John Whisenant. The Monarchs folded after the 2009 season due to ownership financial issues — making Sacramento the first WNBA franchise to fold while holding a championship in its trophy case.
