What Were the Philadelphia Quakers?

The Philadelphia Quakers were an NHL team that played a single season, 1930–31. The franchise had spent the 1920s as the Pittsburgh Pirates before relocating to Philadelphia and rebranding as the Quakers. Playing out of the Philadelphia Arena, the team endured one of the most difficult seasons in NHL history before suspending operations — making it one of the league's great lost franchises.

The Philadelphia Quakers Era-by-Era History

The Pittsburgh Roots. The franchise began as the NHL's Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925 before financial troubles forced a move east to Philadelphia for the 1930–31 season.

1930–31 — The Only Season. The Quakers struggled badly in their lone campaign, posting a 4–36–4 record — among the worst single seasons in NHL history — amid the depths of the Great Depression.

After 1931. The Quakers suspended operations and never returned, leaving behind one of the rarest, most collectible identities in all of hockey. (Philadelphia would not have another NHL team until the Flyers arrived in 1967.)
