The Houston Roughnecks were the breakout franchise of the 2020 XFL revival, going 5–0 — the only undefeated team through the pandemic-shortened inaugural season — behind quarterback P.J. Walker. The team continued under Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and RedBird Capital ownership when the XFL relaunched in 2023.
When the XFL and USFL merged to form the UFL in 2024, the Roughnecks identity carried over to the merged Houston franchise for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The franchise reverted to the Gamblers name for 2026 and folded after that season.
