The New Jersey Rockets blasted into the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) for a single season, playing the winter of 1981–82 at the newly opened Brendan Byrne Arena in the Meadowlands. Joining the fast-growing indoor soccer scene of the early 1980s, the franchise hoped to capitalize on the brand-new East Rutherford venue and the region's deep soccer roots. The venture proved short-lived, however: the Rockets struggled financially and declared bankruptcy in mid-1982, shutting down after just one campaign.
