The Denver Avalanche brought fast-paced indoor soccer to McNichols Sports Arena, competing in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) from 1980 to 1982. Awarded to owner Ron Maierhofer in early 1980, the club played its first match that November and quickly drew solid crowds, averaging nearly 8,000 fans per home game and ranking among the league's attendance leaders in its debut season. Despite the enthusiasm in the stands, the Avalanche struggled to find consistent results on the boards and folded after just two winters.
