The New York Knights played three seasons in the AFL from 1988 to 1990, originally hosted at Madison Square Garden — making them the first arena football franchise to play in one of the most iconic venues in American sports. The Knights gave the New York metro market its first AFL representation.
After playing at the Garden, the franchise briefly relocated within the region before folding. The Knights were part of the league's earliest expansion wave and represented arena football's effort to break into the New York market, a foothold that would be revisited multiple times in subsequent decades with the CityHawks, Dragons, and Red Dogs.
