The Newark Bears were an independent-league franchise that revived the historic Bears name (a legendary New York Yankees AAA affiliate from 1932 to 1949) at a brand-new downtown Newark ballpark in 1999. Originally a charter member of the Atlantic League, the Bears later moved to the Can-Am League before folding after the 2014 season — one of the more visible defunct franchises of the modern minor leagues independent era.

The Bears captured Atlantic League titles in 2002 and 2007 and rostered a number of former major leaguers looking for one more shot — including Jose Canseco, Rickey Henderson, Carl Everett, and Armando Benítez. Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium has since been demolished.
