The New Jersey Red Dogs played five seasons in the AFL from 1997 to 2001 at Continental Airlines Arena (now part of the Meadowlands Sports Complex). The Red Dogs gave the New Jersey side of the New York metro market a dedicated arena football franchise.

After the 2001 season, the franchise relocated to North Carolina and became the Carolina Cobras (2001–2004). The Red Dogs represent one of three concurrent AFL franchises that competed for the New York metro market during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
