About the Minnesota Pipers

The Pipers were the inaugural ABA champions — the 1967–68 Pittsburgh Pipers, who beat the New Orleans Buccaneers in seven games for the first ABA title behind league MVP Connie Hawkins. Owner Gabe Rubin sold the team that summer to Bill Erickson, who promptly relocated the franchise to Minnesota for 1968–69 to fill the void left when the Lakers had moved to LA in 1960.

The Pipers played their home games at the Met Center, the same arena used by the NHL's Minnesota North Stars. Hawkins was lost to the franchise mid-season when the NBA's Phoenix Suns settled his long-running antitrust case and got him into the league — a devastating blow that derailed Minnesota's title defense. Coach Verl Young's Pipers stumbled to 36–42 and lost in the first round of the playoffs. After just one Twin Cities season, financial pressure forced ownership to relocate the franchise back to Pittsburgh as the Pioneers (later the Condors), making the Minnesota Pipers one of the rarest single-season ABA teams of all time.
