About the Utah Stars
The Stars relocated to Salt Lake City from Los Angeles in 1970, becoming the first big-league pro franchise in Utah's history and the cornerstone of what would later become a true basketball state. Bill Sharman coached, Zelmo Beaty anchored the post, and Willie Wise emerged as one of the ABA's premier two-way wings. In their first Utah season the Stars went 57–27 and won the ABA Championship, defeating Rick Barry's New York Nets in seven games — with Beaty named Finals MVP. The Salt Palace shook for the parade.
The Stars stayed competitive throughout their five Utah years, reaching the conference finals three more times under Sharman and his successor Tom Nissalke. In 1974 the franchise made the most audacious draft pick in pro basketball history when they selected 19-year-old Moses Malone straight out of high school — Malone became the first prep-to-pro player ever and went on to a Hall of Fame career. Financial trouble hit during 1975–76, and the team folded in early December rather than finishing the season. But the Utah Stars set the template that the Jazz would later inherit — a basketball-mad Salt Lake fanbase that punches well above its market size.
