Known locally as the Aztecas Dorados de Monterrey (the Golden Aztecs), the team played a single season in the Continental Football League in 1969 — making the Aztecas Dorados the first professional American-football team based in Mexico.

The Aztecas joined the league as part of an experiment to expand pro football into Mexico, drawing on the strong amateur football culture of Monterrey. The Continental Football League folded after the 1969 season, and the Aztecas Dorados remain a unique footnote as the earliest pro American-football presence south of the U.S. border.
