About the Las Vegas Posse

The Posse were one of three American expansion teams added to the CFL for the 1994 season as the league tried to plant Canadian football in U.S. markets. Owned by Nick Mileti, coached by Ron Meyer (a former NFL head coach), and quarterbacked by Anthony Calvillo — yes, the same Anthony Calvillo who would go on to become the all-time CFL passing leader — Vegas opened with high hopes and the most colorful uniforms in the league.

The reality was harsher. Summer afternoon games in the Mojave Desert proved unworkable; attendance averaged a touch over 13,000; and the team finished 5–13, last in the South Division. The novelty wore off fast, and ownership folded the franchise after the season — Calvillo would resurface with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and eventually the Montreal Alouettes, where he became a Hall of Famer. The Posse remain the only major-league pro sports franchise in Las Vegas history that lasted exactly one season — a CFL curiosity that's grown into a beloved cult throwback.
