What Were the Kansas City Scouts?
The Kansas City Scouts were an NHL expansion team that played just two seasons, from 1974 to 1976. Kansas City was awarded the franchise in 1972, and the brand-new Kemper Arena was built to host them. The team took its name from The Scout, the famous statue of a mounted Sioux scout that overlooks downtown Kansas City — one of the city's most beloved landmarks.
The Kansas City Scouts Era-by-Era History
1974–75 — The Debut. Life was hard from the opening face-off. The Scouts played their first eight games on the road while Kemper Arena was finished, going winless in that stretch, and never recovered. Caught between inflated player costs, undercapitalized ownership and thin crowds — they averaged just over 8,000 fans in a 17,000-seat building — the Scouts struggled.
1975–76 — The Final Season. The losses and the financial problems mounted, and the franchise won only 27 games across its two seasons in Kansas City.
1976 — The Move West. The franchise was sold and relocated to Denver, becoming the Colorado Rockies. Six years later it moved again to become the New Jersey Devils — a three-time Stanley Cup champion. Kansas City only had the Scouts for two seasons, but the bloodline runs straight into a modern NHL power.
The Venue — Kemper Arena
The Scouts played at Kemper Arena, the 17,000-seat building constructed specifically to bring major-league hockey to Kansas City. Shared with the NBA's Kansas City Kings, it was the home of the city's brief big-league hockey gamble.
