The Kansas City Scouts spent just two seasons at the top tier of professional hockey — and almost no time on home ice in their first year. With Kemper Arena's construction still unfinished when the 1974–75 season opened, the expansion Scouts played their first eight games on the road before finally making their home debut on November 2, 1974, when rookie Wilf Paiement scored the franchise's first goal.

Like most expansion teams the Scouts struggled, going 15–54–11 in that first season and averaging just 8,218 fans in the 17,000-seat Kemper Arena. Weak attendance and rising costs doomed the franchise, and after two seasons it relocated to Denver in 1976 as the Colorado Rockies — the first of two further moves that eventually produced today's New Jersey Devils.
