The Quebec Nordiques are one of the great "what if" franchises in Legacy Hockey history — a fiercely supported, French-Canadian small-market team that built a championship-caliber roster just before being relocated and renamed, with the new ownership winning championships in Denver almost immediately.

Founded as a charter World Hockey Association (WHA) team in 1972, the Nordiques captured the 1977 Avco Cup as WHA champions before joining the major professional hockey league in the 1979 merger. The Stastny brothers — Peter, Anton, and Marian — defected from Czechoslovakia in 1980, and Peter Stastny captured the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year with 109 points (then a league rookie record). The Nordiques reached the Stanley Cup semifinals four times and the 1985 Conference Finals, and by the early 1990s the club had drafted Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Eric Lindros (later traded), and Peter Forsberg — the foundation of a championship roster. Financial pressures forced the franchise to relocate to Denver in 1995, where the rebranded team won the Stanley Cup in their first season.
