The Cleveland Barons hold a singular distinction in Legacy Hockey history: they are the last team to fold from the top tier of North American professional hockey. The franchise had relocated from Oakland in 1976 — minority owners George and Gordon Gund convincing primary owner Mel Swig to move the struggling California Golden Seals to the Gunds' hometown of Cleveland — and set up shop at the Richfield Coliseum halfway between Cleveland and Akron.

Two miserable seasons followed. The Barons posted a 22–45–13 record in their first season, finishing in the Adams Division basement. Attendance was modest and the Gunds' financial losses mounted quickly. With another struggling franchise — the Minnesota North Stars — facing similar problems, the league brokered an unprecedented merger in June 1978: the two teams combined, with the Gunds becoming majority owners of the surviving team, which retained the North Stars' name, colors, and history. The Barons' two-season Cleveland run ended without a single playoff appearance, and Ohio would not see major professional hockey again until the Columbus Blue Jackets arrived in 2000.
