The Atlanta Flames were one of two expansion franchises (alongside the New York Islanders) added to the major professional hockey league in 1972. The Flames name was a tribute to the burning of Atlanta by Union General William Sherman during the Civil War — a uniquely Southern identity for a sport with deep Northern and Canadian roots.

Built by inaugural and only general manager Cliff Fletcher and coached by Hall of Famer Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, the Flames assembled a competitive roster anchored by center Tom Lysiak — the team's first-round 1973 draft pick who became the franchise's all-time scoring leader (431 points) and a three-time All-Star (1975, 1976, 1977). Winger Eric Vail led the franchise's Atlanta era in goals scored (174). The Flames posted six straight winning or .500 seasons from 1975 to 1980, but they could not break through in the playoffs, suffering five consecutive first-round exits from 1976 to 1980. Falling attendance and ownership instability forced the franchise to relocate to Calgary in 1980, ending Atlanta's first chapter of major-league hockey. The city would return to the Legacy Hockey ranks 19 years later when the Thrashers expansion franchise arrived — and itself eventually relocated.
