Ironically, the club's nickname, chosen by majority stakeholders via fan ballot, was chosen in memorial to the fires set in and around Georgia by the Union Army at the culmination of the American Civil War. The club's eight years the Flames qualified for the playoffs six times, but never won a playoff series.
