The New York Yankees football team played all four seasons of the AAFC from 1946 to 1949 at Yankee Stadium, sharing the venue with the MLB Yankees (who owned the football team). The Yankees were among the AAFC's strongest franchises, reaching the championship game in 1946 and 1947 — losing both times to the Cleveland Browns dynasty.
Star running back Spec Sanders led the Yankees to the 1946 AAFC East crown. When the AAFC dissolved after 1949, the Yankees franchise was absorbed into the NFL's New York Bulldogs and renamed the New York Yanks for 1950–1951 — a continuation that ended after two NFL seasons. The Yankees' AAFC run remains the city's most successful alternative-league football venture.
