The Columbus Chill were the Ohio capital's third foray into minor league hockey. Unlike their predecessors, though, the Chill were wildly popular throughout their entire existence. The franchise was originally awarded to Cleveland by the East Coast Hockey League, but at the behest of the team's GM, Davie Paitson, it was shifted to Columbus before it first hit the ice. The team performed well on the ice and at the gate, as it regularly packed the 5,000-seat Taft Coliseum past capacity. It was undone only by the arrival of the big league Blue Jackets.
