The Owls began in Columbus, Ohio and had formerly been known as the Checkers and the Seals. The team eventualkly moved to Dayton, filling the void left by the Dayton Gems. The team spent its final seasons in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Their owner, Al Savill, was able to leverage his ownership of the Owls into buying the Pittsburgh Penguins.
