Team: San Diego Gulls
Years Active: 1966–1974 (WHL)
Home: San Diego Sports Arena — San Diego, CA

The original San Diego Gulls were built by veteran sports booster Bob Breitbard, who opened the San Diego Sports Arena in 1966 and owned both the Gulls and the city's NBA Rockets. Competing in the Western Hockey League for eight seasons, the Gulls became one of the league's strongest gate attractions, regularly outdrawing major-league franchises.

Coached by Max McNab and later Jack Evans, the Gulls' signature player was Willie O'Ree, the first Black athlete to play professional hockey's top tier and an All-Star during his time in San Diego. The team drew strong crowds into the early 1970s but was evicted from the Sports Arena in 1974 to make room for the incoming Mariners, ending the franchise's run.
