The Roanoke Steam were a charter member of af2 when the developmental indoor football league launched in 2000, playing home games at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Steam competed for three seasons but were unable to reach the playoffs.
The club folded after the 2002 season amid financial difficulties and modest attendance, giving southwest Virginia a short-lived entry in the developmental indoor football ranks.
