With the help of a young Ted Williams, the original San Diego Padres finished second in their 1936 debut season and won the league championship in just their second year. The franchise had been the Hollywood Stars before relocating south when its Los Angeles rent doubled.

After changing hands several times over the next two decades, the Padres surged in the 1960s and became a dominant PCL force. When MLB arrived in San Diego in 1969, the new major-league club took the Padres name while the original franchise moved to Eugene, Oregon and became the Emeralds. Notable alumni included Ted Williams, Joe Horlen, Art Shamsky, Bobby Doerr, Minnie Miñoso, Tony Pérez, and Jack Merson.
