About the San Diego PCL Padres
The Pacific Coast League Padres were a minor-league professional baseball franchise that played in San Diego, California from 1936 through 1968. The franchise originated as the Hollywood Stars and relocated to San Diego for the 1936 season under owner Bill Lane. The Padres played at Lane Field (a temporary downtown wooden ballpark, 1936–1957), then at Westgate Park (1958–1967), then briefly at San Diego Stadium / Jack Murphy Stadium (1968) before the MLB Padres arrived as an NL expansion franchise in 1969 and the PCL Padres effectively ceased Pacific Coast League operations.
The franchise's most famous chapter is Ted Williams. Williams — born and raised in San Diego — signed with the PCL Padres in 1936 at age 17 as a left-handed-hitting outfielder. He played 42 games for the Padres in 1936 and a full season in 1937 before the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract for $35,000 in December 1937. Williams went on to become one of the greatest hitters in MLB history (.344 lifetime average, 521 home runs, two MVP awards, two Triple Crowns, last MLB player to hit .400 in a season).
The Padres also developed Bobby Doerr (Hall of Fame second baseman who went on to a 14-year Boston Red Sox career), Vince DiMaggio (Joe DiMaggio's older brother, who played for the Padres before reaching MLB), and dozens of other future MLB players across the franchise's 32-year PCL run. The PCL was unofficially considered an "open classification" league in the 1950s — a third major league in everything but name — and the Padres were one of its anchor franchises throughout that era.
The franchise's PCL operation ceased in 1969 when MLB awarded the San Diego Padres expansion franchise. The MLB Padres adopted the same nickname as a tribute to the PCL franchise but are a completely separate organization. The PCL Padres' 32 years of San Diego baseball heritage form the foundation of pre-MLB Padres history.

Can I add my name and number to a PCL Padres jersey?
Yes — most styles offer free customization. Pick a PCL Padres legend — Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Vince DiMaggio — or your own name. Custom items are final sale and made to order.
Are the PCL Padres the same franchise as the MLB Padres?
No. The PCL Padres operated from 1936 through 1968 as a Pacific Coast League minor-league franchise. The MLB Padres are a separate NL expansion franchise that began play in 1969. The MLB Padres adopted the "Padres" nickname as a tribute to the PCL franchise but are a completely separate organization.
Did Ted Williams really play for the PCL Padres?
Yes. Williams signed with the PCL Padres in 1936 at age 17 and played for the franchise in 1936 (42 games) and 1937 (full season) before the Boston Red Sox purchased his contract in December 1937. The PCL Padres years were his only professional baseball experience before MLB.

Gift Ideas for the PCL Padres Fan
- For the San Diego baseball fan: The PCL Padres are San Diego's defining pre-MLB baseball heritage. A jersey signals real local sports knowledge that goes deeper than the MLB Padres' 1969 founding.
- For the Ted Williams fan: Williams played for the PCL Padres at age 17 in his San Diego hometown before signing with the Boston Red Sox. A teenage Williams Padres jersey is the ultimate deep-cut for Williams enthusiasts.
- For the Pacific Coast League historian: The PCL was unofficially considered a third major league in the 1950s. The Padres were one of its anchor franchises. A PCL Padres jersey honors the era when the West Coast had quasi-major-league professional baseball.
- For the Bobby Doerr fan: Hall of Famer who developed with the PCL Padres before his 14-year Boston Red Sox career.
- For the modern MLB Padres fan: A PCL Padres throwback honors the franchise's pre-MLB San Diego baseball heritage that the MLB Padres adopted by name when they arrived in 1969.
Lane Field and Westgate Park — The PCL Padres' Home Ballparks
The PCL Padres played at three different San Diego ballparks across their 32-year PCL run.
Lane Field (1936–1957) was a temporary wooden ballpark located at the foot of Broadway in downtown San Diego, built specifically for the franchise's 1936 arrival. Capacity was approximately 8,000. The ballpark was named for franchise owner Bill Lane. Lane Field was demolished in 1957; the site is today the location of luxury hotel development. A historical marker commemorates the ballpark.
Westgate Park (1958–1967) was a more substantial concrete-and-steel ballpark in Mission Valley, with capacity approximately 8,200. The Padres moved to Westgate Park for the 1958 season after Lane Field's demolition. Westgate Park hosted the Padres through the 1967 season. The site is today part of Fashion Valley Mall.
San Diego Stadium / Jack Murphy Stadium (1968) hosted the Padres' final PCL season as the franchise transitioned out of Pacific Coast League play in advance of MLB's 1969 arrival. The stadium also hosted the MLB Padres from 1969 through 2003 before they moved to Petco Park.
Ted Williams and the 1936–1937 Padres
Theodore Samuel Williams — Hall of Fame Class of 1966, two-time MLB MVP (1946, 1949), six-time AL batting champion, last player to hit .400 in an MLB season (.406 in 1941) — began his professional baseball career with the PCL Padres at age 17. Williams was a San Diego native who had attended Hoover High School in his hometown.
The Padres signed Williams in 1936 immediately after his high school graduation. Owner Bill Lane initially used Williams as a part-time player, but his obvious talent quickly earned him regular at-bats. Williams played 42 games for the 1936 Padres, batting .271 — modest production but with the foundational hitting mechanics already evident.
The 1937 season established Williams as a full-time PCL star. He played the full 1937 season as the Padres' starting left fielder, batting .291 with 23 home runs and 98 RBI. The Boston Red Sox purchased his contract for $35,000 in December 1937 — substantial money for a 19-year-old with one full season of professional experience.
Williams went to Boston for the 1938 season but spent that year with the Triple-A Minneapolis Millers (where he hit .366 with 43 home runs and 142 RBI). He debuted with the Red Sox on Opening Day 1939 at age 20. The rest is MLB history.
For San Diego baseball fans, a Ted Williams PCL Padres jersey represents the city's connection to one of the greatest hitters in baseball history during his earliest professional years.
How to Identify Authentic PCL Padres Throwback Apparel
- Check the team-specific design. The PCL Padres wore "Padres" wordmark home jerseys with "SD" cap logo. The brown-and-orange color palette evolved across the franchise's 32-year run.
- Verify period-correct construction. Pre-1970 minor-league jerseys used wool flannel.
- For customization: We use period-correct numbering font on custom jerseys.
- Royal Retros standard: Every product is reviewed for period accuracy.
