Team: Chicago Blitz
Years Active: 1983–1984
Home: Soldier Field — Chicago, IL
The Chicago Blitz were one of the USFL's most ambitious original franchises — and one of its most chaotic. Owned by Dr. Ted Diethrich and coached in 1983 by George Allen, the Blitz built a roster of NFL veterans, including quarterback Greg Landry and running back Tim Spencer, and went 12–6 in their debut season, reaching the divisional round before falling to the Philadelphia Stars.
Diethrich, who also owned the Arizona Wranglers, then swapped his two franchises' rosters wholesale before 1984. The post-trade Blitz collapsed to 5–13, and Chicago folded after the season — but the 1983 roster's run remains one of the most respected single seasons of the original USFL.
