The St. Lucie Legends were charter members of the Senior Professional Baseball Association — a winter league for retired major-leaguers (35+, or 32+ for catchers) that played 1989–90 plus a partial 1990–91 season before financial collapse. The Legends made their home at the New York Mets' spring-training complex in Port St. Lucie, sharing the minor leagues stage with other Florida-based SPBA franchises.

Notable Legends included Graig Nettles, Vida Blue, and Mike Easler. The SPBA was the brainchild of California businessman Jim Morley, who envisioned a chance for fans to see retired stars back on the field — a concept that briefly captured baseball's attention before economics caught up with it.
