The Gold Coast Suns played in the Senior Professional Baseball Association — a winter league for retired major-leaguers age 35-and-up — based out of South Florida's Pompano Beach. The Suns lasted the league's full inaugural 1989–90 season but folded along with the rest of the minor leagues circuit during the truncated second season.

Notable Suns included Cesar Cedeño, Jim Morrison, Rick Wise, and George Hendrick — typical of an SPBA roster that mixed All-Star-caliber veterans with longtime journeymen looking for one more shot at organized ball.
