The Bradenton Explorers played in the Senior Professional Baseball Association out of historic McKechnie Field — also the longtime spring-training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates — during the league's 1989–90 inaugural season. The SPBA was founded for retired major-leaguers age 35-and-up (32 for catchers), giving fans a chance to see veteran stars back on a minor leagues diamond.

Notable Explorers included Ferguson Jenkins, Clete Boyer, and Sixto Lezcano. The league played a 72-game schedule but financial troubles cut the second 1990–91 season short, ending the SPBA experiment after roughly a season-and-a-half.
