The Carolina Cougars were established as the relocated Houston Mavericks, charter members of the ABA. They moved to North Carolina in 1969. Tom Meschery coached the team in 1971, and after retiring as a player, Larry Brown took over the following season — winning ABA Coach of the Year for the 1972–73 squad that went 57–27.

The Cougars were touted as a regional team, playing home games in three cities: Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh. Game 7 of the Eastern Division Finals was played in Charlotte instead of Greensboro where the team had won Games 2 and 5; following the loss, many questioned the decision and the team never made another deep playoff run. They became the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974. Notable players included Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, Joe Caldwell, and Mack Calvin.
