The Tampa Bay Bandits are remembered as the most beloved franchise of the original USFL (1983–1985), a name revived for the modern USFL's 2022 season. Coached by Steve Spurrier, whose “Banditball” passing offense became one of the league's signature attractions, and owned by John F. Bassett with actor Burt Reynolds as celebrity co-owner, the original Bandits went a combined 35–19 across three seasons behind quarterback John Reaves and running back Gary Anderson, reaching the playoffs in 1984 and 1985.

The revived Bandits played a single 2022 season under head coach Todd Haley, going 4–6 before the franchise relocated to Memphis as the Showboats for 2023 — a brief run that still carried forward one of spring football's most cherished names.
