The Gears arrived as an expansion franchise for the 1972–73 International Hockey League season and spent eleven years making the Saginaw Civic Center one of the league's better rooms. Saginaw was a General Motors town, and the name was a nod to the local factories.

The Gears made the playoffs nine straight seasons from 1973 to 1982 and reached the championship finals five times in that stretch, winning it in 1976–77 and 1980–81. Goaltenders Mike Palmateer, Mario Lessard, and Bob Froese all passed through Saginaw before long careers at hockey's highest level. The franchise folded after the 1982–83 season.
