The Saginaw Gears joined as an expansion franchise for the 1972–73 season, playing out of the Saginaw Civic Center and quickly becoming one of the Midwest's top developmental hockey clubs.

The Gears made the playoffs nine straight seasons, from 1973 to 1982, and reached the championship finals five times in that stretch, winning it all in 1976–77 and 1980–81. Goaltenders Mike Palmateer, Mario Lessard and Bob Froese all passed through Saginaw before going on to lengthy careers at hockey's highest level.

The franchise folded following the 1982–83 season after eleven years in Saginaw.
