The New Jersey Americans played the inaugural ABA season at the Teaneck Armory, a National Guard–owned facility. The team tied for the final playoff spot but had to forfeit its play-in game after finding the arena already booked for a circus, with no suitable venue available in time.

The following season the franchise moved to Long Island and became the Nets, going on to win two ABA championships before joining the senior league in 1976. Notable Americans included Levern Tart and Tony Jackson.
