About the New Jersey Americans

The Americans were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in the league's debut 1967–68 season, owned by Arthur Brown and based in Teaneck, New Jersey. Coached by player-coach Max Zaslofsky, the team played its home games at the Teaneck Armory — a former military facility better suited to weekend National Guard drills than pro basketball — and finished 36–42, fourth in the Eastern Division.

The Americans tied with the Kentucky Colonels for the final playoff spot and were scheduled to play a one-game tiebreaker, but the Teaneck Armory was double-booked with a circus and the substitute Long Island arena floor was deemed unsafe. The team forfeited the game without playing, lost the playoff spot, and within months had relocated to Long Island as the New York Nets. The franchise eventually moved to Brooklyn as the Brooklyn Nets we know today — making the New Jersey Americans the original franchise of one of the NBA's most well-known teams. Royal Retros throwbacks honor the one-and-only Garden State season.
