The Chaparrals were charter members of the ABA in 1967, known for a wealthy ownership group with a reputation for being cheap — the team rarely signed its draft picks, and the lack of investment translated to a lack of fan interest.

Despite Hall of Famer Cliff Hagan as player-coach and a roster that made the playoffs every season, fans rarely showed up, and a stretch playing home games around the state as the Texas Chaparrals only made attendance worse. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 1973, the team was sold and moved to San Antonio. Notable players included Hagan, Ron Boone, John Beasley, Cincy Powell, and Bob Verga.
