What Was the World League of American Football?
The World League of American Football (WLAF) was the NFL's first international professional football league, operating in two distinct phases. The first phase (1991–1992) featured ten teams across North America and Europe, including London Monarchs, Barcelona Dragons, Frankfurt Galaxy, Sacramento Surge, Ohio Glory, Montreal Machine, Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, Orlando Thunder, San Antonio Riders, New York/New Jersey Knights, and Birmingham Fire. After a two-year hiatus, the league returned in 1995 as a Europe-only operation, rebranded to NFL Europe in 1998 and continued through 2007.
The History of the WLAF / NFL Europe
1991–1992: The Original WLAF. The league launched in spring 1991 with ten teams across two continents — six in North America and four in Europe. The London Monarchs, with quarterback Stan Gelbaugh, won the inaugural World Bowl in June 1991 by defeating the Barcelona Dragons. The 1992 World Bowl was won by the Sacramento Surge over the Orlando Thunder. After the 1992 season, the league paused operations.
1995–1997: The European-Only Relaunch. The WLAF returned in 1995 as a Europe-only league with six teams: London Monarchs, Frankfurt Galaxy, Rhein Fire, Amsterdam Admirals, Scottish Claymores, and Barcelona Dragons. Frankfurt Galaxy won the 1995 World Bowl.
1998–2007: NFL Europe. The league rebranded to NFL Europe in 1998 and continued operating until 2007. Berlin Thunder, Hamburg Sea Devils, and Cologne Centurions joined the league during this era. NFL Europe served as a developmental league for NFL backups and prospects, producing dozens of NFL contributors. Hamburg Sea Devils won the final World Bowl in 2007.
NFL Players Who Played in the WLAF / NFL Europe
Kurt Warner. The future Super Bowl champion played for the Amsterdam Admirals in 1998 before his breakout NFL season with the St. Louis Rams. The Amsterdam season is an essential part of his story.
