What Were the Amsterdam Admirals?

The Amsterdam Admirals were a professional American football team based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, that played in NFL Europe from 1995 to 2007. Formed as part of the NFL's European revival of the World League, the Admirals were a fixture of the competition for all 13 seasons and won the World Bowl in 2005. They began at the historic Olympisch Stadion, built for the 1928 Olympics, before moving to the modern Amsterdam ArenA.

The Amsterdam Admirals Era-by-Era History

1995 — The Founding. Amsterdam was one of the anchor franchises of the relaunched, Europe-only league. The Admirals reached World Bowl III in their debut season, falling to the Frankfurt Galaxy 26–22.

1996–2004 — A League Fixture. The Admirals settled into the Amsterdam ArenA and remained a consistent part of the NFL Europe landscape, developing NFL-allocated talent year after year.

2005 — The Championship. The Admirals' crowning moment. In World Bowl XIII at the LTU Arena in Düsseldorf on June 11, 2005, Amsterdam defeated the Berlin Thunder 27–21 for the franchise's first and only title. Quarterback Kurt Kittner was named MVP after throwing for 239 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

2006–2007 — The Final Seasons. The Admirals played on through the league's last campaign in 2007 before the NFL shut down NFL Europa that summer.

World Bowl XIII — Champions in 2005

The Admirals' title is the heart of the franchise's story. A 27–21 win over the Berlin Thunder, behind MVP quarterback Kurt Kittner, gave the Netherlands its NFL Europe championship and made Amsterdam one of the select group of franchises to lift the World Bowl. A Royal Retros Admirals throwback honors that championship run.

The Venues — Olympisch Stadion & Amsterdam ArenA

The Admirals began at the Olympisch Stadion, built for the 1928 Summer Olympics, before moving to the state-of-the-art Amsterdam ArenA when it opened in 1996. Two of the great venues in Dutch sport framed the team's 13-season run.
