What Were the Scottish Claymores?

The Scottish Claymores were a professional American football team based in Scotland that played in the World League of American Football — later NFL Europe — from 1995 to 2004. They initially played all home games at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, and later split home games with Hampden Park in Glasgow. Named for the great Scottish broadsword, the Claymores reached the World Bowl twice, winning the championship in 1996.

The 1996 title is the heart of the franchise's story: the Claymores had gone 2–8 with no home wins in 1995, then turned around to win it all the next year — the league's first ever worst-to-first run.

The Scottish Claymores Era-by-Era History

1995 — The Rough Start. In their debut season the Claymores struggled to a 2–8 record and failed to win a single game at home. It was an inauspicious beginning for Scotland's new team.

1996 — Worst to First. Everything changed. The Claymores went 7–3 in the regular season, won all their home games, and hosted World Bowl '96 at Murrayfield. Before 38,982 fans, Scotland defeated the defending-champion Frankfurt Galaxy 32–27 to claim the title — the first worst-to-first turnaround in league history.

1997–1999 — Establishing Roots. The Claymores remained part of the league's core, building a loyal Scottish following and adding Glasgow's Hampden Park to their home slate to grow the fan base.

2000 — Back to the World Bowl. Scotland reached the championship game again, falling to the Rhein Fire 13–10 in a defensive World Bowl 2000 — the second-lowest-scoring title game ever.

2001–2004 — The Final Seasons. The Claymores played on through 2004 before the franchise was discontinued ahead of the league's late-era contraction. Ten seasons made Scotland one of NFL Europe's most enduring outposts.

World Bowl '96 — Worst to First at Murrayfield

The Claymores' championship is one of the great underdog stories in football. A team that had won just twice and never at home in 1995 came back to win all its home games in 1996 and then beat the defending champion Frankfurt Galaxy 32–27 in front of nearly 39,000 fans at Murrayfield. It remains the defining day in Scottish gridiron and the centerpiece of any Claymores throwback.

The Venues — Murrayfield & Hampden Park

The Claymores played their early seasons at Murrayfield Stadium, the home of Scottish rugby in Edinburgh, where they won the 1996 World Bowl. To broaden their reach they later split home games with Hampden Park, Scotland's national football stadium in Glasgow — two of the most storied venues in British sport.
