What Were the Birmingham Fire?
The Birmingham Fire were a professional American football team based in Birmingham, Alabama, that played the two seasons of the original World League of American Football, in 1991 and 1992. Coached by Chan Gailey — later an NFL head coach — the Fire were one of the league's strongest North American sides, reaching the playoffs in both seasons and posting a 7–2–1 record in 1992 in a loaded West Division.
The Birmingham Fire Era-by-Era History
1991 — The Inaugural Season. Birmingham joined the World League as a founding North American franchise and immediately made the playoffs, drawing strong crowds to historic Legion Field.
1992 — A Winning Year. The Fire went 7–2–1 and returned to the postseason, part of a dominant West Division alongside the champion Sacramento Surge (8–2) and San Antonio Riders (7–3). Birmingham's defense was among the best in the league.
The End of the Original WLAF. The NFL suspended the World League after 1992, and the Fire folded with the rest of the league's North American clubs — a consistent winner cut short by the league's closure.
The Venue — Legion Field
The Fire played at Legion Field, the storied Birmingham stadium known as the "Old Gray Lady," long a centerpiece of Alabama football. It gave the franchise a big-time setting and a passionate Southern fan base.
