What Were the Orlando Thunder?

The Orlando Thunder were a professional American football team based in Orlando, Florida, that played the two seasons of the original World League of American Football, in 1991 and 1992. Playing in the 70,000-seat Florida Citrus Bowl, the Thunder were one of the World League's most colorful franchises — and one of its best by the end, reaching World Bowl II in 1992. The front office famously included broadcaster Lee Corso as general manager.

The Orlando Thunder Era-by-Era History

1991 — The Inaugural Season. Coached by Don Matthews, the Thunder went 5–5 and just missed the playoffs. Former Florida Gators quarterback Kerwin Bell tied for the league lead with 17 touchdown passes, giving Orlando one of the WLAF's most exciting offenses.

1992 — The World Bowl Run. Under coach Galen Hall, the Thunder broke through with an outstanding 8–2 record, tied for the best mark in the league, and powered into the championship game.

June 6, 1992 — World Bowl II. At Montreal's Olympic Stadium, the Thunder met the Sacramento Surge for the title. Orlando led 17–6 into the fourth quarter before the Surge rallied to win 21–17. It was a heartbreaking finish to the franchise's best season.

The End of the Original WLAF. The NFL suspended the World League after 1992, and the Thunder folded with the rest of the league's North American teams — going out as one of the final season's best clubs.

The Venue — Florida Citrus Bowl

The Thunder played at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, a 70,000-seat stadium that gave the franchise one of the biggest home fields in the league. The bowl was the backdrop for Orlando's brief, bright run through World League football.
