The Indianapolis Racers joined the World Hockey Association (WHA) as an expansion franchise in 1974, playing at the brand-new Market Square Arena and giving Indianapolis its first major-league professional hockey team. The Racers built solid crowds at MSA across their four seasons in the league.

The Racers' lasting place in hockey history was secured in summer 1978, when owner Nelson Skalbania signed a 17-year-old phenom named Wayne Gretzky out of the Ontario junior ranks — Gretzky's first professional contract. After eight games and three points in Indianapolis, Skalbania sold Gretzky's contract to the Edmonton Oilers in November 1978, and the Racers folded weeks later when ownership could no longer sustain the franchise. The Racers' brief existence is bookended by the single most consequential player signing in WHA history.
