The Fog arrived in the Bay Area in May 1980, when owner Dr. David Schoenstadt bought the Major Indoor Soccer League's Detroit Lightning franchise and moved it west, renaming the club San Francisco Fog for a lone season out of the Cow Palace starting that November. Player-coach Johnny Moore, a former outdoor pro in the Bay Area, was the club's best player and earned an honorable-mention nod to the league's All-Star team.

On the field the Fog struggled, finishing 11-29 — the worst record in the twelve-team circuit — while allowing a league-worst 271 goals. After missing the playoffs, Schoenstadt sold and relocated the franchise to Kansas City for the following season, ending one of the shortest runs in the league's history.
