The Oakland Stompers arrived in the Bay Area in 1978 after founder Milan Mandarić relocated the struggling Connecticut Bicentennials franchise across the country into the North American Soccer League. Playing out of the Oakland Coliseum, the Stompers built an immediate local following, drawing 32,104 to their home opener against a cross-bay rival on April 2, 1978 — at the time the largest crowd ever recorded for a club soccer match in California.

On the field results were tougher. The club finished 12-18, third in its division, though it made headlines by signing goalkeeper Shep Messing to a $100,000 contract, then the richest deal for an American-born soccer player. After a single season in Oakland the franchise was sold and moved north to Edmonton for 1979.
