The Clippers were one of ten charter clubs in the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, the outfit that merged with the rival United Soccer Association the following year to form the North American Soccer League. Oakland topped the Western Division and the overall regular-season standings in that debut year, then beat the Baltimore Bays in a two-leg home-and-home final to claim the league championship, adding the Commissioner's Cup with a win over the St. Louis Stars for good measure.

In 1968, with the two leagues merged, Oakland's roster remained one of the strongest around — five Clippers were named to that season's postseason Best XI, including goalkeeper Mirko Stojanovic. With no other West Coast clubs committed for 1969, the Clippers played out a farewell schedule of exhibitions against international opposition rather than compete in a depleted league, and the franchise was formally dissolved on June 4, 1969.
