Owned by RKO General and Wall Street investor Peter Elser, the Generals were a charter entry in the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, playing out of Yankee Stadium and finishing third in a five-team Eastern Division. When that league and the United Soccer Association merged to form the North American Soccer League for 1968, the original plan called for New York's two clubs — the Generals and the Skyliners — to combine into one franchise.

RKO General pulled its backing in January 1968, but Elser pressed on with new partners to keep the Generals going solo. The team improved to a 12-8-12 record but missed the playoffs, and folded for good at the end of the 1968 season.
