The original New Orleans Voodoo of the Arena Football League (AFL) were established in 2004 by Tom Benson, owner of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Damage to the VooDoo’s home field, Smoothie King Arena, caused by Hurricane Katrina, forced the team to suspend operations in 2006. They returned in 2007 and played until the league ceased operations in 2009. The second incarnation of the Arena Football League welcomed the Voodoo back in 2010 and the teamed played on through the 2015. Though they drew well in the early years, the VooDoo’s popularity waned and the league was forced to shutter its operations. However, the team returned for the third incarnation of the Arena Football League in 2024, this time going by the name Louisiana VooDoo, playing their home games at Blackham Coliseum in Lafayette, LA.
