The Montreal Olympique joined the North American Soccer League in January 1971 as its ninth franchise, backed by Sam Berger, already an owner in Canadian football, and unveiled alongside fellow expansion clubs in New York and Toronto. The Olympique struggled from the outset, finishing their debut season with a league-worst 4-5-15 record and the lowest average attendance in the circuit.

A brief 1972 season at Université de Montréal Stadium — which included a 19-year-old Graeme Souness turning out for the club before his career took him to Liverpool and the Scotland captaincy — was a modest bright spot, but Montreal never drew consistent crowds. After three seasons and a combined 13-14-30 record, Berger folded the franchise in January 1974 following failed efforts to secure a more accessible stadium.
